A roof is one of the most important parts of your home. If you neglect it, you will be in for a rude awakening when water starts leaking through and damaging all of your furniture and electronics. The following five signs are indications that your roof is rotten:
1) If there are areas where shingles have been pulled up
This may indicate a leaky pipe or something else under the shingle that is expanding and pulling up the shingle. If you see any bare patches – this could indicate that your roof has a hole or leaks in it somewhere. This can be dangerous because mold will start to grow if not addressed immediately, which can cause severe health problems for anyone who breathes it in. If there are dark spots on your ceiling, these may also indicate water damage from an above leak (like rain coming through). Also, keep an eye out for discolored wood beams under the rafters of your home as this typically means that there’s some kind of problem with moisture.
2) If there is discoloration on any part of the ceiling.
This could be an indication of water damage. Bare patches on your roof or ceiling indicate that there is likely a hole in the shingles and/or siding which will allow for leakage, causing mold growth and other problems down the road. Pay attention to any dark spots on your ceilings because this can mean you have an issue with moisture inside (like rain coming through). Also, look out for discolored wood beams underneath rafters as this usually means there’s some kind of problem with humidity. There are several signs that homeowners should watch out for when it comes to their roofs: bare patches, discoloration, and water stains on either the ceiling or walls typically indicating leaks somewhere in one’s home.
3) Moss growth
If your roof has moss and mold, the shingles may push apart, creating a breach that allows water into the attic. It will soon spread to your walls and ceilings from there. So, how do you know if it’s there? You’ll see algae and green moss developing on your shingles during inspections. Even a tiny amount of it can be dangerous. It generally begins where water is allowed to sit, such as in leaf dams in valleys and along the roof’s edges if gutters are allowed to overflow.
4) odors coming from inside the house
If you smell a musty, moldy odor coming from your house’s interior during the winter months and it doesn’t go away in warmer weather, this is an indicator of roof leaks. The floor joists may be saturated with moisture that finds its way into your home through ceiling cracks or other parts of the roof system. This can lead to health problems like asthma for those who are sensitive to such things, so it should not be ignored!
5) wet insulation
Another telltale sign of roof system problems is wet insulation. In the attic, this happens when there are leaks in a flat or low-slope roof (such as with asphalt shingles) and rainwater finds its way through to the insulation below.
